Bob’s Bits for April 2025

As we reach the end of April, with 25 ski resorts currently open and another 17 set to reopen for the weekend before closing, the season is gradually winding down. Many individuals I've spoken to have opted for a well-deserved break at the beach. The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) will present the Kottke figures at the national show during the first week of May, revealing the results of the 2024/2025 season. Based on my observations, Northern Vermont enjoyed a favorable snow year, with the timing of snowfall playing a crucial role in its impact. Notably, Christmas week saw a scarcity of snow.

In this edition of the STEEP Newsletter, I am revisiting two posts: "How Important is Maintenance Culture" (3/29/2019) and "Can the Hiring of Seasonal Staff be Made Easier" (7/12/2019). I believe these posts remain relevant, prompting ski area leaders and managers to engage in discussions on these topics.

Another article in this month's issue delves into the realms of culture and teams. I see this subject as offering significant opportunities within the ski area industry. I consistently advocate for leadership to address matters concerning the individuals who are instrumental in the functioning of ski areas, particularly the front-line staff. I contend that this, alongside the impact of climate change, represents the two most significant challenges that the ski industry will face in the foreseeable future.
