Steep Management, LLC, meaning me, is very excited about a next step being taken to help mountain operations departments at ski resorts across North America. Staying true to our mission of providing products for training, safety, tracking, and maintaining productivity, Steep Management will be offering a leadership course on-line, specifically developed for mountain operations staff.
This is not a course from Harvard Business School for CEO’s, COO’s or General Managers. It is for managers, supervisors and those who want to develop their skills relating to leadership. The course will be 18 segments in length, will involve self-evaluation, reading suggested articles, quizzes that allow you to proceed to the next chapter, and ending with an evaluation that earns a course certificate. You will work at your own pace, although there will be a fixed time for completing the course.
The developer of the course is Dave Esty, a retired business executive, who has taught this course for over 30 years, and has many years as a ski instructor under his belt as well as more than 3 decades as a ski patroller. Dave was a seasoned CEO and has been listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World since 1972.
The biggest question is why would Steep Management do this? It will not help sell the software products that Steep is deeply committed to. In developing the monthly newsletter over the past year, there has been a very recurring thread that permeates in almost all the pieces I have written. That thread is leadership; it is the one consistent constant that is at the center of many of the solutions that have been discussed. Many times the need for leadership is implied but not necessarily spelled out such as in lift-maintenance-what-is-that and in want-to-be-a-manager. It became more apparent to me as I continued to write theses posts, as well as reflecting on my own experiences, that leadership training is typically not available to most mountain ops staff in the ski resort world. The subject of leadership can be very broad, Steep’s approach is to focus on the foundation upon which leadership is built. This article from McKinsey provides an insight as to the subject of leadership within the corporate structure, What Matters in Leadership.
Next month the details of the course, as well as enrollment instructions, will be shared with you via the Steep newsletter or at www.steepmanagement.com; stay tuned!
